What is neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is the study of the relationship between the brain and behavior. Neuropsychologists are psychologists with specialized training in evaluating individuals who have experienced injury or illness to the brain.

Why was I referred for a neuropsychological evaluation?

There are several reasons why individuals get referred for a neuropsychological evaluation. It could be due to a brain injury caused by an accident or illness. A healthcare provider may also refer a person for assessment if they are concerned about their memory or other cognitive abilities and want to understand them. Another common reason for referral is to examine how a person copes with their medical symptoms, injury, or illness. Usually, the healthcare provider would like to assess the person’s cognitive abilities, such as memory, language, problem-solving, and attention.

What takes place in a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychologist will interview you to assess your cognitive abilities. You can have a friend or family member present. The tests will measure attention, memory, language, problem-solving, and constructional ability, administered by a technician. You may also complete measures to understand how your illness or injury has affected your mood, personality, or coping.
